Happy Spring Gardening #OXOSpringGardening

Tucked behind a tangle of brush at the bottom of the gentle hill of our townhouse backyards is a cleared space of about a quarter of an acre. Several of our neighbors proudly refer to it as "the community garden".

A few years ago, Joe and some of our other more agriculturally inclined neighbors decided to rescue a plot of land from the bramble, vines and thorns that did little for us but shelter the herd of deer that ravaged our ornamental gardens. Now the square clearing is home to neat rows of asparagus, rhubarb, raspberries and blackberries, onions and shallots, garlic, winter squash and pumpkins for late summer and potatoes for the fall. Small handfuls of sugar-sweet asparagus have already graced our dinner table!  There will be tall and lacy-looking sweet fennel and colorful bread poppies.



There will also be an abundance of fragrant herbs, including dill, chamomile, lavender, mint and lemon balm. For exotic beauty, a passion flower vine is climbing determinedly up its trellis. There are currant bushes, with three colors of berries: pink, red and black. We have three types of apple and Asian pear trees, two types each of peach and cherry and two paw paws (a non-tropical mango).



There are also two kinds of fig trees, which Joe carefully covers with wire fencing and a carpet "coat" to help tide them through our recent, especially-frosty winters. Foxglove, tall alliums that look like giant purple lollipops and shoulder-high pink, purple and white cleome flowers will soon be an eye-popping sight in what is certainly one of the most well-loved, carefully tended plots of ground in the township.

Cultivator is a perfect garden tool for stirring and loosening soil, and pulling up weeds. Two outer prongs longer than center prong to easily maneuver around asparagus stems.
